Leader: Nelson Mandela

What do you think when you hear the word “leader”? You can imagine some famous leaders in business world such as CEO of Apple, or in political world such as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. These leaders led people, company and state, and also, Nelson Mandela is the one of them. Nelson Mandela had objected to Apartheid for long term since he was young, and he had imprisoned for 27years from 1963 to 1990. However, he was released, he and President FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize and he became South Africa’s first democratically elected President (NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION). This paper will identify the ways to lead people that Nelson Mandela used and the reason why he could be the one of the most respected leader although he had imprisoned for 27years. There are several key elements ways and thought of the leadership. These include “Leadership is behavioral, not positional”, “Choose collaboration over retaliation” and “Never give up on seemingly impossible ideals” (Nicholas 2013). The third one means, “Be willing to find a new mark” (Dennis 2012). The research of the others and other leadership skills has not done.

Leading at the edge Chapter 1

Leading at the edge chapter 1.

We learned about who is Shackleton in the last class.

Next, in this part, I learned some ways of thinking and leading followers to goal from the reading!!!!

It's difficult make difference "leading" and "reading".....

Anyways,

The most impressed for me is "Do Something!"

It sounds like not good leader, but Shackleton was maintaining followers motivation to survival by this thinking!!!

First day when Shackleton departed from the camp, they just went forward 1 mile. And next day, they just went forward 1 mile.
They had to go forward 312 miles to call help!!!! However, they just go forward 1 mile in first day and second day!!!

"In spite of the dangers, Shackleton understood the need to try."

It's really difficult decision!!!

I think this way to lead people is really really important.

For example,I'm belonging to the street dance club in ICU.

and, I'm the leader of my genre of freshman and sophomore.

I can use the way to lead followers "Do Something!"

If leader practice really hard wit having the passion, followers might be impressed and practice hard, I think.

I hope this way make sense and lead followers.

Challenging for me

Hi everyone!

In the last class of RW, we talk about "Did you face the really challenging problem? and How did you succeed or make it?"

So,

I will talk about the STORY which is really challenging for me!!!

In the last summer, I had stayed in Philippine for 4 weeks ! because I belonged Service-Learning program in ICU!!!

The problem happened at the first time when we go out from dormitory to shopping!!!

There was a little bit space from dormitory to shops, just 100meters.

And there is "poor people" on the street.

We have seen Japanese poor people in Japan, who are called "Homeless".

So, I just tried to go through there as usual in Japan.

However, "poor people" traced us and poked us again and again with saying "give me money"....

I had nothing to say and I couldn't escape from there because I felt misery......

I couldn't do nothing for them at the moment, but I decided to give snacks for them!!!

because if I gave money for them, they might use that for drag or not effective way for them.

Foods are useful for them because they can live that day. They can!!!

I don't know it was good or bad. However, I don't regret giving food for them!!!!

What I learned from 2readings

First, about "Power Poses" according to "How Power Poses Can Help Your Care".

"New research shows posture has a bigger impact on body and mind than reviously believed"

If you take care about your posture, it would change your hormones and behavior!!!

What is the "Power Pose"?

Power Pose is standing tall and leaning slightly forward with hands at one`s side, or leaning forward over a desk with hands planted firmly on its surface.

The power pose lead to higher levels of testosterone and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
These hormone changes are connnected to better performance and more confident, assertive behavior.

I think thoes concepts are absolutely right. When I speak with power pose, I feel I got confidence and easy to convey what I think.

First picture is the High-Power Poses.

Next, Second picture is the Low-Power Poses.

Thoese poses are really understanable for people because thoese  poses  usualy can be seen and imaged as the postures of good  leaders!!!

However!!! I have a question!!!

Is this posture really Power Poses???
At the first sight, I thought it looks like ARROGANT and INSOLENT one for me!!!

Maybe, it`s because of the cultural difference.
So, we need to be careful about the cultures and atmosphere!!!

Next, "Social Intelligence and the Biology of Leadership".

According to Goleman and Boyatzis, key elements of leadership related to social intelligence are
